"I need AI in my company" is the starting point of almost every conversation with a new client. But behind that sentence there are two different solutions that solve different problems: an AI Agent and a custom MCP. Choosing the wrong one first is not a serious mistake, but it does delay the result. This is the practical difference.
What is an AI Agent?
An AI Agent is a system that runs a complete workflow from start to finish: it receives an input (an email, a document, a request), processes it according to business rules, and delivers a result — without a person having to operate it step by step. Examples: an agent that classifies and answers incoming requests, that generates a recurring document, or that automatically follows up on quotes already sent.
What is a custom MCP?
An MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a connector that gives AI direct access to read, write, and operate inside the applications your company already uses — your CRM, your ERP, your spreadsheets, your project management software. Instead of a human copying and pasting information between systems, the MCP lets the AI (and the people using it) work directly on that data, securely and with defined permissions.
The difference in one table
| AI Agent | Custom MCP | |
|---|---|---|
| Solves | A complete process, end to end | The AI's access to one or more systems |
| Comparable to | A digital employee that carries out a task | A bridge between the AI and your tools |
| Typical example | Classifying and answering incoming requests | Letting the AI read and update your CRM directly |
| When you need it first | When the bottleneck is a specific repetitive task | When the bottleneck is the lack of connection between systems |
When do you need both?
Most AI agents that are useful in practice need one or more MCPs to work: an agent that follows up on quotes needs an MCP connecting it to the CRM; an agent that processes site logs needs an MCP connected to the project management system. That is why at AutentIA we almost always design both together as part of a single solution — the Agent is the "public face" that carries out the work, and the MCP is the infrastructure that gives it secure access to your company's real information.
How to decide where to start
If your team wastes time doing a repetitive task (drafting, classifying, following up), start with an AI Agent. If your team wastes time moving information between systems (copying data from a CRM into a spreadsheet, updating two systems with the same information), start with an MCP. In the initial assessment we identify which of the two applies to you — and, if you need both, in what order to build them so you see results sooner — with the method we use to prioritize what to automate first.
